Libations anyone? My answer to that question is always yes and yes!

A while back I did a story for the Charleston City Paper on retro cocktails and what could be more fitting for this here blog?  See, the thing about having a signature cocktail is not only can it tell a little story about you and your significant other, but also it can really cut down your bar tab!  Some of my favorite retro drinks that could be incorporated into your event are as follows:

French 75

Like the quick firing artillery piece it’s named after, the French 75 cocktail will drive you ballistic. Made of gin, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and champagne, it’s a sure fire drink and lives up the 75mm howitzer that gave it the moniker.

Papa Doble

Ernest Hemingway loved a good Daiquiri. So much so he wrote about it in a letter to his son Patrick in 1939, saying, “We stayed up late, and I drank a few highly frozen Daiquiris just to see what their effect would be (it was moderately terrific and made me feel a friend of all mankind).”  Hemingway particularly enjoyed the ones served at his favorite bar in Havana, El Floridita, where he consumed many a Papa Doble. The cocktail mixes up white rum, lime, grapefruit juice, and a splash of grenadine with an orange slice garnish.

Between the Sheets

They didn’t call them the “Roaring Twenties” for nothing. Modern day barfly’s may think themselves provocative ordering a Sex on the Beach or Buttery Nipple, but try requesting a “Between the Sheets” at a speakeasy in 1922! Guaranteed to have your guests naked and in a stranger’s bed faster than they can dance the Charleston. The original recipe is ¾ ounces brandy, ¾ ounces white rum, ¾ ounces Cointreau or triple sec,¾ ounces fresh lemon juice and ¼ teaspoon simple syrup. Sadly it doesn’t come with a ride home, it’s that strong!
